I’ll never forget the day I found out my home had a Batchelder fireplace. Many years ago I was in a tile store in Pasadena and saw something that looked very familiar. I asked the salesperson, “what is that tile?” She said “it’s a Batchelder reproduction.” I said “I have that same tile on my fireplace.” Her eyes got huge and she exclaimed “you have a Batchelder fireplace?” I said “I do now.” Who knew?
Anyway, enough about me. This week I had the unexpected pleasure of viewing two homes for sale in Pasadena with exquisite Batchelder fireplaces.
The first of these homes, located in the North Pasadena Heights Landmark District, features not one but two Batchelder fireplaces!
Rumor has it this incredible work of art in the living room had been painted over at one point and the most recent owners unearthed this treasure. Nice work!
The second Batchelder fireplace is located in the home’s spacious master suite. Although it is not mentioned anywhere in the listing materials, I suspect the kitchen countertops may be covered in Batchelder tiles, as well.

The second home on our tour not only contained the most beautiful Batchelder fireplace I have ever seen, it is advertised as follows: “Tile Design: Ernest A. Batchelder.” Whoa.
The Folts House is an Italianite Revival two story home nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley just north of Pasadena City College.
The photos simply do not do justice to this spectacular fireplace set in the living room. It truly must be seen to be appreciated.
